Policy Rotation

Indiana Osteopathic Association (IOA) Public Health Policy Clerkship

The IOA Public Health Policy elective clerkship is available for one MU-COM fourth-year student during the months of January, February, and March 2019. The elective qualifies for 5 hours of elective credit, and introduces students to the state legislative process and public health policy development.

Students spend time shadowing the IOA Executive Director and lobbyists to see state government in action. They have an opportunity to observe sessions of the Indiana General Assembly, attend health related legislative committee hearings, talk with legislators, and participate in state agency, and stakeholder meetings.

Students who complete the rotation learn or are able to:

  • read existing laws and proposed legislation;

  • research health policy issues and draft policy statements;

  • communicate effectively with legislators and state agency officials; and

  • understand how to testify before legislation committees to support, oppose, or propose amendments.

For more information about the 4-week clerkship rotation, please contact Tabitha Arnett, IOA Executive Director, at [email protected] or stop by the IOA office in suite #107 in the Evans Center.
